New Study Inspired Hope for Ovarian Cancer

admin

A new study published in online journal Gynecologic Oncology shows that the combination of certain drugs may prove beneficial against ovarian cancer cells.

Late stage ovarian cancer cells can become resistant to chemotherapy compounds, and the result is often fatal. Scientists from the Mayo Clinic in Florida have focused on the resistance of those cells in their new study, with promising results.

Two drugs, not before used together, Ixabepilone and Sunitinib, used in conjunction with each other have shown to activate a cellular protein called RhoB.  RhoB acts as a “molecular switch”, playing a role in getting these resistant cells to destroy themselves.

Neither of the drugs are currently approved for use with ovarian cancer. Ixabepilone is currently approved for use in metastatic breast cancer while Sunitinib is used for kidney cancer.
